Financial Opportunities for Women in Conflict Areas
IPI supports promising women-owned ventures working in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through small yet impactful microloans. By providing capital to these small businesses, we can support community development and create socio-economic environments that discourage armed group recruitment and recidivism. Microloan FAQs
At IPI, we are convinced that peacebuilding from the bottom up in a war-affected society starts in the community. As leaders at the important intersections of the home, community, and business, women possess the crucial role of leadership where the seeds of peace take the strongest hold and have the most capability for growth.
$50 to $300
This program launched in the Summer of 2022. Each microlending “cycle” lasts 18 months.
While economic development is a crucial aspect of peacebuilding, our microlending program also ensures that recipients receive group mentorship in fiscal, mental, emotional, and sometimes spiritual development. We take a holistic view that fiscal sustainability is one need that is required for peace and stability within a community to take hold.
Loans provide an opportunity for those who have been invested in to faithfully pay back what is earned so that others have opportunity after them. This keeps the program not only sustained, but growing as a small, very competitive interest rate is associated with each microloan. As the recipients have an opportunity to earn and grow in sustainability, they are also given the ability to invest in other members of their community and other, sometimes rivaling communities.
By engaging in lending together, the group guarantees that no one individual assumes unsurmountable risk.
