Where We Work:

Afghanistan

2010

About the conflict

The area that makes up Afghanistan has been conflict affected for centuries. In the late 1970s, it was invaded by the USSR, leading to the rise of the Mujahadeen rebels and over four million refugees fleeing to neighboring Iran or Pakistan. The Taliban then gained control in 1995, subjecting citizens to strict Islamic law and extremely cruel punishments. Following the U.S. invasion in 2001, there was continual unrest and instability.

Throughout these conflicts, the Hazara people have been the target of severe oppression and violence. The Hazara are one of the largest ethnic groups in Afghanistan, and some would consider the Hazaras to be one of the “most persecuted people in the world”, facing slavery, death, and removal from ancestral lands at the hands of the ruling ethnic majority.
